- It is the duty of the public defender to represent all indigent felony defendants within Platte County.
- It is the duty of the public defender to represent all indigent persons charged with a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment within Platte County.
- It is the duty of the public defender to represent all indigent persons against whom a petition has been filed with the Platte County Mental Health Board.
- The office of the public defender is elected by voters every four years.
